BJP Finalises Seat Allocation in Assam, PM Modi Schedules 3 Rallies
BJP secures majority seats in NDA pact; PM Modi's rallies aim to energize voters.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finalized its seat-sharing strategy for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, aiming to contest the majority of the 126 seats while allocating others to key allies. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the BJP will field candidates in 89 constituencies, leaving 26 seats for the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and 11 for the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), completing the NDA alliance's blueprint.
This plan, discussed in recent election committee meetings, sets the stage for candidate announcements following the BJP's central parliamentary board review, expected imminently. Sarma emphasized ground-level preparations, with party workers already mobilized across the state.
Polling for all 126 seats is scheduled for April 9, 2026, with results due on May 4, heightening the stakes for the BJP's bid at a third consecutive term since ousting Congress in 2016. The strategy focuses on fresh faces, women candidates, and development achievements like infrastructure growth and economic gains under the "double-engine" BJP governments at state and center levels.

In a major boost, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address three rallies in Assam during April, energizing the campaign amid intensifying battles with opposition Congress. These events align with the pre-poll momentum, targeting key districts to highlight the state's transformation into India's fastest-growing economy. Past visits by Modi, such as in Nalbari and Diphu, have drawn massive crowds and underscored BJP's organizational strength.
The elections pit BJP's Hindutva-infused development agenda against Congress's anti-incumbency push, focusing on corruption allegations and minority concerns. Assam's diverse demographics, including tribal belts and tea gardens, will test alliances, with AGP securing 21 seats to consolidate regional support. Analysts predict a close contest, but BJP leaders exude confidence in their hat-trick prospects.
As campaigns ramp up, Sarma's unapologetic stance on issues like migrant influxes adds edge to the narrative. With Modi's rallies on the horizon, the BJP aims to replicate its 2016 and 2021 triumphs, banking on governance records amid Northeast India's evolving political landscape.
