BJP Chief Criticises Congress and BRS Ahead of Hyderabad Municipal Elections
BJP chief attacks Congress on dynastic politics; CM challenges debate in assembly.
A political war of words erupted in Hyderabad on Sunday after senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin criticised the Congress over dynastic politics, saying a government driven by an "Italian mindset" has no future in India. Addressing a meeting of BJP booth presidents ahead of the upcoming local body elections, Nabin accused the Congress of prioritising family politics over development and alleged that the party was synonymous with corruption. His remarks triggered a sharp response from the Congress, with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy challenging the BJP to a public debate on governance and election promises.
During his speech, Nabin took aim at both the Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), accusing them of promoting dynastic politics. Referring indirectly to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, he said a government influenced by an "Italian mindset" would not find opportunities in India. He asserted that the BJP believes in nationalism, development and empowerment rather than family-based politics or appeasement, and vowed that the party would "uproot" political forces built around dynastic leadership.
Responding to the BJP's criticism, Revanth Reddy invited the opposition to debate the performance of their respective governments on the floor of the Telangana Assembly. He proposed convening special sessions of both the Assembly and the Legislative Council to compare the 10-year rule of the BRS, the BJP's 12 years in power at the Centre, and the Congress government's two-and-a-half years in Telangana. The chief minister said the discussion would allow the public to judge which government had delivered more effectively on its promises.

Nabin, who is on a three-day visit to Telangana, described the forthcoming local body elections as a crucial opportunity to begin ending what he called a corrupt administration in the state. He said the BJP intends to make development the central issue of the campaign and claimed the elections would mark the first step towards replacing dynastic politics with the development-oriented governance model championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The BJP leader also criticised the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), accusing it of practising religion-based politics instead of focusing on development. Without naming specific incidents, he alleged that certain political parties sought to divide society along religious lines and questioned whether their leadership had delivered meaningful progress for the communities they represented. He argued that development should take precedence over identity-based political campaigns.
AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had not responded to Nabin's remarks at the time of reporting. The exchange comes as political parties intensify campaigning ahead of local body elections in Telangana, with governance, development and political accountability emerging as key issues in the contest. The latest verbal clash reflects the increasingly sharp political rhetoric expected to dominate the state's election campaign in the coming weeks.
