Annamalai Tells BJP President Nitin Nabin He Wants Cordial Separation

Annamalai seeks cordial separation from BJP leadership.

Former Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K. Annamalai has conveyed to senior party leadership that he wishes to part ways “on cordial terms” and chart an independent political path, according to sources, amid growing speculation over his exit from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The development came after Annamalai met BJP national president Nitin Nabin and organisation secretary B.L. Santhosh in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The meeting is understood to have focused on his future role in the party following weeks of internal buzz over his dissatisfaction with the current organisational structure and direction in Tamil Nadu. Sources said Annamalai informed the party leadership that he “wants to move on” and does not see a long-term future for himself within the BJP. While the party is reportedly still attempting to persuade him to reconsider, indications suggest he has largely made up his mind to exit.

According to people familiar with the discussions, the BJP leadership had also offered him a Rajya Sabha seat as part of efforts to retain him in the organisation. However, he is said to have declined the offer, reinforcing speculation that his decision is firm. Sources further indicated that Annamalai is exploring the possibility of launching a new political movement before formally floating a political party.

The proposed initiative is expected to focus on building a volunteer-driven network and attracting professionals and like-minded individuals across Tamil Nadu. He already runs a non-profit leadership initiative called “We The Leaders,” which is expected to form the initial organisational base for his next political project. The planned outfit may also consider contesting upcoming Assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu, which could serve as an early test of his electoral appeal and organisational strength.

The development comes weeks after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which the BJP secured only one seat in the 234-member House. During his tenure as state president, Annamalai had significantly expanded the party’s visibility through aggressive campaigning and extensive grassroots outreach, building a strong personal following in the state.

However, the BJP’s decision to revive its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the polls reportedly led to internal differences, particularly after AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami is said to have pushed for leadership changes in the state unit. Annamalai was subsequently replaced as Tamil Nadu BJP president and did not play a prominent role in the election campaign. His potential departure marks a significant moment for the BJP’s organisational strategy in Tamil Nadu, where the party continues to struggle to expand its electoral footprint against dominant Dravidian parties.
