BJP Challenges Rahul Gandhi To Participate In NEET Debate In Parliament

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to participate in a parliamentary discussion on student protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, after Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to consult Opposition parties on holding a debate. The BJP's appeal came amid continued disruptions in Parliament and a political standoff over the government's willingness to discuss the issue.

In a letter to Birla, Shah maintained that dialogue and discussion were essential to resolving issues in a democracy and indicated his readiness to answer questions in the House. Speaking to reporters, the Home Minister placed the decision with the Opposition, asking whether it wanted to participate in a debate or continue disrupting parliamentary proceedings.

BJP president Nitin Nabin criticised the Opposition over the repeated disruptions, alleging that they reflected an "anarchist mindset". He maintained that the government had repeatedly offered to discuss important issues, while the Opposition was preventing Parliament from functioning. Nabin argued that the public was watching the developments and would judge which side was avoiding parliamentary debate.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal directly questioned whether Rahul Gandhi would attend the proposed discussion, arguing that the government had accepted the Congress leader's demand for a debate. BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh echoed the challenge, maintaining that Gandhi could no longer avoid the discussion if the government was prepared to respond to the concerns raised by the Opposition.

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi urged the Congress to submit a notice for a discussion according to parliamentary rules and participate in the proceedings. He maintained that the Opposition should use the opportunity to put its concerns before the government, listen to the Home Minister's response and present its arguments in the House rather than continuing disruptions.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya also accused the Congress and Rahul Gandhi of pursuing what he termed "politics of obstructionism" and disruption. He alleged that repeated interruptions were wasting taxpayers' money despite the government's stated readiness for a full debate. The BJP's remarks have added to the political confrontation over parliamentary functioning, with the proposed discussion now emerging as another point of contention between the government and Opposition.
