BJP Called Out for Turning Nitish Kumar Into “Desi Maduro”

Opposition calls BJP’s Rajya Sabha strategy a “desi Maduro” political betrayal.

A significant political controversy has erupted in India’s political landscape after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced his intention to contest the Rajya Sabha elections, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties who claim the move undermines democratic mandates and benefits the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The opposition’s reactions have highlighted deep unease over the timing and political implications of the decision.

Nitish Kumar, a seasoned politician who has served as Bihar’s chief minister for over two decades, confirmed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls this week, a move that will soon require him to vacate the state’s top executive post. In a post on social media, Kumar described his Rajya Sabha bid as the fulfilment of a long‑held aspiration to serve in both Houses of Parliament, assuring supporters that his commitment to Bihar’s development would continue even after relocating to the Upper House.

However, opposition leaders were quick to frame the shift as politically engineered. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Kumar Jha drew an unusual comparison, likening the situation to a “desi version of the Maduro model,” referencing the controversial capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year. Jha characterised the Rajya Sabha move as akin to a “kidnapping with consent,” asserting that key decisions were driven by BJP strategists rather than Kumar’s independent will.

Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, echoed these sentiments, accusing the BJP of “hijacking” Kumar and betraying the people’s mandate certified in the 2025 assembly elections. Yadav argued that the BJP’s strategy aimed to engineer a leadership change in Bihar and install a more compliant state government, a claim he said reflected deep mistrust among voters in the ruling coalition’s intentions.

The opposition’s critique extended beyond metaphors. RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari described the BJP’s role in facilitating the Rajya Sabha move as a “huge political abduction,” asserting that some Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] members colluded with the BJP, while grassroots workers expressed disbelief and resentment over what they perceive as an abrupt departure from Kumar’s longstanding leadership role.

The political fallout has also manifested on the ground. JD(U) workers protested outside party offices in Patna, with some demonstrations turning disruptive, reflecting broad discontent not just among rival parties but within Kumar’s own support base. As Bihar prepares for the Rajya Sabha elections and an eventual transition in state leadership, the controversy highlights the sharp divisions and strategic manoeuvring defining contemporary Indian politics.
