Bihar’s 2025 Polls to See 7.4 Crore Voters, Including 14 Lakh First-Timers

Over 7.4 crore voters to decide Bihar’s 2025 assembly polls.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar announced today that over 7.4 crore voters, including 14 lakh first-time voters, are eligible to participate in Bihar’s upcoming assembly elections, setting the stage for a critical democratic exercise in one of India’s most politically vibrant states. Speaking at a press conference, Kumar reaffirmed the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral process, with robust measures to safeguard voters and candidates. The elections, slated for completion by November 2025 to elect 243 assembly members, are expected to witness intense competition, with new entrants like the Aam Aadmi Party challenging established players such as RJD, JD(U), and BJP.

The electorate, totaling 7.42 crore, comprises 3.92 crore male voters, 3.5 crore female voters, and a remarkable 14,000 centenarians, alongside 4 lakh senior citizens above 80. The 14 lakh first-time voters, primarily aged 18-19, represent a significant youth demographic that could influence outcomes in a state where caste and regional dynamics often shape electoral fortunes.

To facilitate this massive voter base, the Election Commission is establishing 90,712 polling stations across Bihar’s 38 districts, ensuring accessibility through meticulous planning, including updated electoral rolls and voter education drives. Bihar’s voter turnout, which stood at 56.8% in the 2020 assembly elections, is expected to be bolstered by these efforts, particularly among young and first-time voters.

Security is a cornerstone of the commission’s strategy, with Kumar emphasizing “zero tolerance to any violence” and strict directives to protect all participants. This focus is critical given Bihar’s history of poll-related tensions and recent unrest in neighboring regions like Ladakh. Measures such as webcasting at vulnerable polling stations and enhanced surveillance aim to curb electoral malpractices.

Social media discussions on X highlight both enthusiasm for the youth vote and concerns about logistical challenges in remote areas. As political campaigns gain momentum—marked by AAP’s bold pledge to contest all seats and Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj pushing reformist rhetoric—the Election Commission’s proactive stance underscores its resolve to deliver a fair and inclusive election, shaping Bihar’s political future.
