Amit Shah Promises Greater Representation For Tamil Nadu Through Delimitation Bill

Amit Shah pushes delimitation bill, accuses DMK-Congress of blocking.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is committed to bringing the proposed Delimitation Bill before Parliament, while accusing the DMK-Congress alliance of obstructing efforts aimed at improving political representation in Tamil Nadu.

Addressing an election rally in Modakurichi in Erode district ahead of the April 23 Assembly polls, Shah said the Centre had proposed increasing the number of Assembly constituencies in the state by 50 per cent in line with population changes. He claimed the move was intended to ensure fairer representation and better reflect demographic shifts across Tamil Nadu.

However, Shah alleged that the proposal was being blocked due to what he described as “narrow political thinking and vested interests” of the ruling DMK and its ally Congress. He said the NDA would not accept such opposition and reiterated that the government remains determined to pass the Delimitation Bill.

The Union Minister also targeted the opposition over the long-pending Women’s Reservation Bill, accusing the DMK-Congress combine of lacking genuine intent to increase women’s representation in legislatures. He said the NDA remains committed to strengthening the role of women in politics and governance.

Shah further launched a political attack on the DMK leadership, alleging dynastic politics in the state. Without naming individuals directly, he referred to the leadership transition from former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to M.K. Stalin, and suggested that political succession within the party was focused on family continuity rather than public welfare.

He told supporters that governance in Tamil Nadu had remained concentrated within one family for decades and argued that this had diverted attention from developmental priorities. His remarks drew strong reactions from BJP workers and supporters at the rally.

Pitching for the AIADMK-led NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu, Shah expressed confidence that the coalition would form the next government in the state. He said an NDA administration would work to restore what he described as Tamil Nadu’s “lost prominence” and would focus on development, corruption control, and improving law and order. The rally is part of Shah’s broader campaign across Tamil Nadu as the BJP intensifies efforts to expand its presence in a state historically dominated by Dravidian political parties such as the DMK and AIADMK.
