Amit Shah Condemns Attacks on PM Modi
Congress, RJD rhetoric crosses limits
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday strongly criticized the alleged use of derogatory language targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother during a Congress-RJD event in Darbhanga, Bihar, calling it a “stain on India’s democracy.” Shah accused the Congress, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, of stooping to a new low in political discourse, unable to accept Modi’s rise from humble origins to the prime minister’s chair for the past 11 years.
Writing on X in Hindi, Shah stated, “The abusive language used against PM Narendra Modi and his late mother from the Congress and RJD platform is utterly deplorable. It tarnishes our democratic values.” He alleged that the Congress has reverted to its “old ways” of poisoning India’s political culture, driven by resentment toward Modi’s leadership. “They cannot tolerate a poor mother’s son leading the nation forward,” Shah added, highlighting Modi’s journey from Gujarat’s chief minister to prime minister since 2014.
The controversy stems from reported remarks made at a joint Congress-RJD rally in Darbhanga, where speakers allegedly used expletives against Modi and referenced his late mother, Heeraben Modi, who passed away in 2022. Shah described the incident as an insult to “every mother and son,” asserting that India’s 140 crore citizens would not forgive the opposition for crossing ethical boundaries. He accused the Gandhi family of fostering hatred against Modi for decades, a trend he claimed has now escalated beyond acceptable limits.

This incident follows a history of heated exchanges between the BJP and Congress. In 2023, Congress leaders faced criticism for personal remarks against Modi, prompting BJP counterattacks citing past insults by Congress stalwarts. The Darbhanga event has intensified political tensions ahead of Bihar’s upcoming assembly elections, with the BJP leveraging the issue to portray the opposition as disrespectful to Indian values. RJD leaders have yet to respond officially, but sources suggest they may distance themselves from the remarks, attributing them to individual speakers.
Shah’s statement underscores the BJP’s narrative of Modi as a leader from modest roots, resonating with millions while framing the opposition’s attacks as elitist. As the row escalates, it risks further polarizing Bihar’s political landscape, with both sides rallying their bases.
