Ajit Pawar: Mahayuti Will Deliver on Farm Loan Waiver
Pawar assures farmers loan waiver at the right time.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reaffirmed the Mahayuti government’s commitment to its promised farm loan waiver, countering Opposition Congress claims that the ruling alliance is neglecting farmers. Speaking to reporters in Pune on Sunday, Pawar dismissed accusations of backtracking, emphasizing that the government is meticulously planning the waiver’s implementation to ensure financial prudence.
“We have not strayed from our promise of a farm loan waiver as outlined in the Mahayuti manifesto,” Pawar stated. “A committee is studying the financial aspects, and at the appropriate time, we will roll out the details.” He underscored the government’s unwavering support for farmers, highlighting existing measures like an annual Rs 12,500 payment per farmer, jointly funded by the Centre and state, and Rs 20,000 crore allocated to cover farmers’ electricity bills.
Pawar also pointed to additional relief efforts, including interest-free loans to shield farmers from private moneylenders and the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme, which provides Rs 1,500 monthly to women. “These initiatives show our dedication to farmers’ welfare,” he said, addressing criticisms during the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly.

Earlier this month, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule clarified that the government is prioritizing targeted relief for distressed farmers facing crop failures and suicidal despair, rather than a blanket waiver. The committee, formed to assess the waiver’s feasibility and execution, is expected to present its recommendations soon, ensuring aid reaches those most in need.
The Congress has intensified its attacks, accusing the Mahayuti alliance of delaying the waiver to sidestep accountability. Social media posts on X reflect growing farmer frustration, with some questioning the timeline, while others praise Pawar’s assurances. As Maharashtra grapples with agrarian challenges, all eyes are on the committee’s forthcoming report, which could shape the state’s rural economy ahead of upcoming elections.
