Abhishek Banerjee Demands Lok Sabha Dissolution Over SIR
TMC leader slams EC’s selective voter list revision.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee intensified his attack on the Election Commission’s (EC) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding the immediate dissolution of the Lok Sabha if the Narendra Modi government endorses the exercise. The Diamond Harbour MP and TMC national general secretary argued that the EC’s claim of faulty voter lists undermines the legitimacy of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In a fiery post on X, Banerjee challenged the EC’s assertion that voter lists, used just a year ago for the 2024 elections, are riddled with irregularities. “If the Government of India agrees with the EC, the first step is the immediate dissolution of Lok Sabha,” he stated, adding that the public has been “betrayed” if the lists are flawed. He insisted that any SIR must be conducted nationwide, not selectively in poll-bound states like West Bengal.
Banerjee outlined a clear sequence for the EC: “Dissolve the House, conduct SIR across the country, then face the people in elections.” Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he went further, demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Union Ministry, arguing that their 2024 mandate rests on a compromised voter list. He also called for criminal proceedings against former Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, under whose oversight the 2024 elections were held.

The TMC leader criticized the EC for targeting West Bengal’s voter lists while deeming other states’ rolls acceptable. “The EC cannot selectively claim voter lists are faulty only in certain states,” Banerjee said, accusing the commission of political bias. His remarks come amid growing controversy over the SIR, which has also drawn scrutiny in Bihar, where voters were wrongly declared “dead” and removed from rolls.
Banerjee’s bold demands have escalated tensions, raising questions about the EC’s credibility and the integrity of India’s electoral process. As the debate over SIR intensifies, his call for nationwide revision and accountability could reshape the political landscape ahead of upcoming polls.
