TMC: PM Must Resign Over Voter Roll Fraud
Abhishek Banerjee demands nationwide electoral roll revision, resignations.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee dropped a political bombshell on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet if the Election Commission (EC) acknowledges discrepancies in India’s electoral rolls. Speaking at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Banerjee, a key figure in the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, called for the dissolution of the Lok Sabha and a nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, arguing that selective revisions in states like Bihar, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu undermine the EC’s credibility.
Banerjee argued that if the EC identifies flaws in the voter rolls, the legitimacy of the current government, elected in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, is questionable. “If the voter list is flawed, the prime minister, over 240 BJP MPs, and even the elections of the President and Vice-President are invalid,” he stated. He accused the BJP of pushing SIR in Bihar to manipulate voter lists ahead of the state’s assembly elections later this year, anticipating a potential defeat if voters exercise their rights freely.
“The EC cannot cherry-pick states like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, or Madhya Pradesh while targeting others,” Banerjee asserted, insisting that any SIR must be uniformly applied across India. He emphasized that rules must remain consistent nationwide, rejecting what he called the BJP’s “selective” electoral tactics. The TMC leader’s remarks intensify the ongoing controversy surrounding alleged voter roll manipulations, which have already sparked protests and parliamentary disruptions, including adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha earlier today over Bihar’s SIR exercise.
