Punjab Police Arrest Two Accused, Recover Grenades Linked to Cross-Border Terror Module

Punjab police foil terror threat by arresting two suspects and seizing hand grenades, linked to cross-border terror elements.

Counter Intelligence (CI) officials in Bathinda, Punjab, foiled a potential terror threat on Wednesday with the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of two hand grenades, police said.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Buta Singh, alias Gurpreet Singh or Gopu, a resident of Gillwali in Ferozepur, and Harmander Singh, alias Nikka, from Mothawali in Moga. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that preliminary investigations indicate the grenades were part of an illegal supply chain linked to cross-border elements, intended to disrupt peace and public safety in the border state.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Avneet Kaur Sidhu said police received a credible input that two operatives connected to a terror module had obtained hand grenades. Acting swiftly, an intelligence-led operation was launched on Moga-Ferozepur Road, leading to the apprehension of both suspects and the seizure of the explosives. “The swift action by CI teams thwarted an untoward incident and neutralised a potential threat,” she added.

An FIR was registered on March 17 under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosives Act at the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) in Fazilka. Investigations are ongoing to trace forward and backward linkages and identify additional associates involved in the module.

This operation comes shortly after the Amritsar Rural Police, on March 14, busted an ISI-sponsored terror and cross-border arms smuggling network, recovering an AK-47 rifle, magazines, cartridges, and other weapons from two arrested suspects. Preliminary findings indicated the accused were in contact with foreign-based handlers via social media and engaged in radicalisation and spreading anti-India narratives.

The Punjab police have emphasised that these actions underscore their proactive approach to securing the state against terror threats and illegal arms smuggling.
