X Raises Press Freedom Flag, Shot Down Immediately By Indian Government

X and Indian Government Clash Over Press Censorship Allegations

On July 3, 2025, X, owned by Elon Musk, accused the Indian government of ordering the platform to block 2,355 accounts, including Reuters and ReutersWorld, under Section 69A of the IT Act, citing national security without justification.

X claimed the order demanded compliance within an hour, with non-compliance risking criminal liability. The accounts, blocked on July 5, were restored on July 6 after public outcry, but X expressed "deep concern" over ongoing press censorship in India.

The platform is exploring legal options, though Indian law limits its ability to challenge such orders, urging affected users to seek court remedies. X’s statement follows a March 2025 lawsuit against the government, alleging expanded censorship powers via a new website, which India denies is a "censorship portal."

The Indian government refuted X’s claims, denying any fresh blocking order on July 3 and asserting it immediately requested Reuters’ reinstatement.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology accused X of exploiting technicalities, delaying account restoration for over 20 hours. The government clarified it has no intention of blocking prominent news outlets.

This dispute, part of a broader legal battle, highlights tensions between X and Prime Minister Modi's government at a time when Starlink is set to enter India after a lot of navigation.
