Wayanad Weather Radar: IMD Move Aims at Early Disaster Warnings
IMD to install advanced weather radar in landslide-prone Wayanad district.
The India Meteorological Department has announced that Wayanad will receive an advanced weather radar to strengthen forecasting and early-warning capabilities in the disaster-prone district. The installation is expected to provide more accurate and timely information to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, district administration and the public during periods of severe weather.
The decision comes as Wayanad faces increasing concern over extreme rainfall, landslides and other weather-related hazards. Known for its forested landscape, hills, coffee plantations and wildlife, the district also contains several vulnerable settlements and transport routes. Its steep terrain and intense monsoon conditions can increase the danger posed by prolonged or exceptionally heavy rainfall.
Weather radars help authorities monitor rainfall intensity, movement and distribution over an area. More localised and timely observations can support forecasters in identifying developing weather systems and issuing alerts to administrators and residents. The new facility is expected to improve coordination among agencies responsible for emergency planning, public warnings, evacuations and disaster-response operations.

The radar project assumes particular significance following the devastating landslides that struck hilly areas near Meppadi in July 2024. The disaster killed 298 people and caused widespread destruction, leaving communities across the district struggling with loss and displacement. The tragedy highlighted the need for stronger monitoring, faster communication and improved preparedness in areas vulnerable to landslides.
Wayanad suffered another fatal incident on July 7, 2026, when a landslide occurred near the site of the under-construction Kozhikode-Wayanad twin-tunnel project. Seven people were killed in that disaster, which took place less than two years after the Meppadi landslides. The repeated loss of life has renewed attention on the district’s exposure to dangerous weather and unstable slopes.
The proposed radar cannot by itself prevent landslides or eliminate disaster risk, but the information it produces could help authorities make quicker and better-informed decisions. Its effectiveness will also depend on reliable communication of warnings, coordination between departments and prompt action at the community level. The IMD said the system would support both official agencies and members of the public through improved forecasts and early alerts.
