Landslide Threat Prompts IMD Warning Across Shimla And Several Himachal Districts For Tourists

IMD warns tourists amid Himachal landslide risk.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall, landslides and mudslides in several districts of Himachal Pradesh as active southwest monsoon conditions are expected to continue over the state in the coming days. Authorities have advised residents and tourists to remain vigilant, avoid vulnerable areas and follow official advisories as rain-related hazards are likely to intensify. According to the IMD's latest impact-based forecast, there is a possibility of landslides and mudslides in the districts of Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Sirmaur.

These districts, characterised by steep terrain and fragile slopes, are particularly susceptible to landslides during periods of intense rainfall. The weather department has urged people living in or travelling through these areas to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary movement in landslide-prone zones. The IMD has also warned that water levels in rivers, streams and other water bodies across the affected districts are likely to rise significantly due to continued rainfall. Increased surface runoff and overflowing drains may lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents have been advised to maintain a safe distance from rivers, nullahs and other fast-flowing water bodies, as sudden increases in water levels can pose a serious risk. The advisory forms part of the IMD's impact-based forecast issued during the ongoing southwest monsoon season, which aims to provide early warnings about weather-related hazards and their likely effects on people and infrastructure. The department has recommended that local authorities remain prepared for possible disruptions to road connectivity, transport services and essential utilities in vulnerable regions.

Tourists visiting popular hill destinations such as Shimla, Kullu and nearby areas have also been advised to monitor weather updates before planning travel. Heavy rainfall can trigger landslides that block highways and mountain roads, leading to traffic disruptions and delays. Travellers have been urged to avoid trekking, camping and other outdoor activities in vulnerable locations until weather conditions improve. The State Disaster Management Authority and district administrations are expected to remain on alert, with emergency response teams prepared to respond to any rain-related incidents.

Authorities have appealed to residents to report signs of slope instability, such as cracks in the ground or falling rocks, and to cooperate with evacuation orders if issued. Himachal Pradesh experiences frequent landslides during the monsoon season because of its mountainous terrain and intense rainfall.  In recent years, heavy rains have caused widespread damage to roads, bridges, homes and public infrastructure, besides disrupting transport and tourism across the state.

Continuous monitoring of weather conditions and timely evacuation from vulnerable areas remain key measures to minimise risks. The IMD has advised people to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by local authorities. With monsoon activity expected to remain active over the coming days, officials have emphasised the importance of precautionary measures to ensure public safety and reduce the impact of heavy rainfall and associated hazards.
