IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Mumbai, Pune And Multiple Maharashtra Districts
IMD warns of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain across Maharashtra.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts across Maharashtra, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall activity affecting Mumbai, Pune and the Konkan region. The alert comes as the state continues to experience unstable weather conditions marked by intermittent monsoon activity, strong winds and rising humidity levels across multiple regions.
According to the IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall are expected in isolated areas, with wind speeds likely reaching 40–50 km/h. Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are among the regions expected to witness significant weather activity as the monsoon system continues to strengthen along the western coast.
The weather department has also indicated that rainfall activity is likely to persist over the coming days. From June 10 to June 13, light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected across Mumbai, Pune and Thane. In addition, districts such as Satara and Kolhapur may experience heavier rainfall as monsoon conditions intensify further in the region.

In other parts of the state, including Nashik and Ahmednagar, scattered rainfall with thunder and lightning is forecast, while Marathwada and Vidarbha are expected to see intermittent light to moderate showers. Despite rainfall activity, the IMD has cautioned that heat conditions may continue in certain pockets, particularly in central and eastern Maharashtra.
The Vidarbha and Khandesh regions are expected to remain particularly affected, with temperatures likely to cross the 40°C mark even as rainfall remains inconsistent. Meteorological officials noted that the uneven progression of the monsoon is contributing to a mix of humid, hot and storm-prone conditions across the state, creating weather variability across short distances.
Agricultural experts have advised farmers to avoid initiating Kharif sowing until rainfall becomes more consistent and widespread. Speaking on the monsoon pattern, Dr Kailas Dakhore, head of the Meteorology Department at Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Agricultural University in Parbhani, said atmospheric conditions are currently slowing the monsoon’s advance into Marathwada, with more stable coverage expected between June 12 and June 18. Authorities have also urged residents to take precautions during thunderstorms, including avoiding open areas, unplugging electrical devices and staying clear of water bodies and tall isolated structures due to lightning risk.
