Water Level In Seven Mumbai Lakes Rises To 88.58%; IMD Issues Yellow Alert
Reservoir levels climb as rain alert remains in effect.
Mumbai's seven-lake reservoir system, which supplies drinking water to the city, has reached 88.58 per cent of its total storage capacity, according to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday. The reservoirs currently hold 12.82 lakh million litres of water out of their total live storage capacity of 14.47 lakh million litres. The level is almost identical to the 88.65 per cent recorded during the same period last year, indicating that the city's water reserves remain stable despite easing rainfall.
Among the seven reservoirs, Modak Sagar and Vihar have reached full capacity at 100 per cent, while Tulsi stands at 99.35 per cent and Tansa at 98.69 per cent. Middle Vaitarna has recorded a storage level of 89.83 per cent, followed by Bhatsa at 87.36 per cent and Upper Vaitarna at 76.64 per cent. The reservoirs, located across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Nashik districts, are replenished primarily by the southwest monsoon and form the backbone of Mumbai's water supply system.
Mumbai receives around 4,100 million litres of drinking water daily from these reservoirs. Despite the healthy storage levels, the city continues to face a daily water shortfall of approximately 500 to 600 million litres. To address the growing demand, the BMC is pursuing long-term infrastructure projects, including the proposed desalination plant at Manori, aimed at ensuring a more sustainable and reliable water supply in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places along with strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, with gusts of up to 70 kmph. Similar weather conditions have been forecast for Nashik. Over the next 48 hours, the city is expected to experience generally cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rainfall and occasional gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph.
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for neighbouring districts of Palghar and Thane, warning of more intense weather conditions. Although the alert level is expected to be lowered over the following three days, light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue across the region. With more showers forecast over the weekend, reservoir levels are expected to rise further, providing an additional boost to Mumbai's water reserves for the remainder of the monsoon season.
