IMD Predicts Fresh Spell Of Heavy Rainfall Across Assam
Weather department issues fresh heavy rain warning.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam and several northeastern states over the next three to four days, raising concerns over flooding, flash floods, waterlogging and landslides. According to the weather department, widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely between July 30 and August 1 across parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as the weather system could significantly impact normal life.
The IMD said the developing weather system over neighbouring states is expected to influence several districts in Upper Assam, increasing the risk of runoff and inundation. An orange alert has been issued for Tinsukia district in Assam. Similar alerts have also been issued for Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts of Nagaland, where heavy rainfall may generate substantial runoff that could affect the adjoining Assam districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
The weather office has also predicted heavy rainfall in several districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley. Runoff from these districts is expected to affect parts of Assam, particularly Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur. According to the IMD, many of the affected areas in Arunachal Pradesh are likely to receive widespread rainfall ranging between 6 cm and 11 cm per day, while isolated places, especially Papumpare district, may record very heavy rainfall of 12 cm to 20 cm.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has warned that the fresh spell of rainfall could aggravate the flood situation in several areas and trigger urban waterlogging, flash floods, disruption of road traffic and localised landslides, particularly in hilly and vulnerable regions. The authority said all district administrations have been placed on alert and directed to closely monitor the evolving weather conditions and take necessary precautionary measures.
Authorities have urged residents, especially those living in low-lying flood-prone areas and on hill slopes, to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. People have also been advised to follow weather updates and safety advisories issued by the IMD and local administration. Emergency response agencies are expected to remain on standby as the region prepares for the anticipated spell of heavy monsoon rainfall over the coming days.
