Wangchuk’s Wife Highlights Government Message After Movement Gains Momentum

A day after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike, his wife Gitanjali J Angmo said the movement demanding accountability over exam paper leaks and reforms in the education system had been successful. She described the widespread support received by the agitation as a "wake-up call" for the government and expressed hope that the concerns raised by students would receive serious attention during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Speaking to reporters, Angmo said Wangchuk’s protest had resulted in a written assurance from the government that students involved in the agitation would not face legal action. She said student leaders would decide the future course of the protest after discussions with the government. According to her, the assurance included protection from FIRs, lathi-charge, or any form of undue force against protesters.
Angmo further stated that the government had also assured that families of students who died by suicide during the NEET paper leak controversy would receive compensation. She said discussions on examination reforms and other educational changes raised by the protesters would be taken up in Parliament, adding that the commitments had been provided in writing and signed by the authorities.

Calling the movement "very successful", Angmo said leaders from across the political spectrum, including members of the ruling alliance and the Opposition, had assured that the issues would be discussed during the ongoing parliamentary session. She emphasised that the conclusion of the hunger strike was only the beginning of a larger effort towards educational reforms and addressing concerns raised by students across the country.
Angmo said the movement gained nationwide support because the concerns surrounding NEET irregularities represented broader public dissatisfaction with systemic issues. She argued that the paper leak controversy was only a symptom of deeper challenges affecting various institutions and said the response from citizens showed that the issue had connected with common people’s experiences.
Meanwhile, Angmo provided an update on Wangchuk’s health following the end of his prolonged fast. She said he was currently consuming liquids as part of the recovery process, with his diet expected to gradually progress to semi-solid and then solid food. She added that the priority was ensuring his health stabilised after the extended hunger strike while discussions continued over the demands raised by the movement.
