Vishal Verma Dies After Basketball Backboard Falls on Him at Pune Maritime Institute
Marine cadet Vishal Verma died after a basketball pole collapsed on him during exercise.
A tragic accident at Pune’s Tolani Maritime Institute claimed the life of 20-year-old cadet Vishal Verma on Saturday morning after a basketball hoop collapsed while he was performing pull-ups. Vishal, a second-year marine engineering student, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to reports, Vishal had stepped out on campus for a morning walk and some light exercise. Eyewitnesses said he used the basketball hoop to do pull-ups when the entire frame unexpectedly gave way, striking him on the head. Fellow students and staff immediately rushed him to the hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.
Vishal, originally from Basti in Uttar Pradesh, had joined the Pune-based institute in 2024 for a four-year B.Tech course in marine engineering, scheduled to conclude in 2028. Friends and colleagues described him as disciplined and dedicated to both academics and fitness. His sudden death has left the campus community in shock.

Dr. Sanjeet Kanungo, principal of Tolani Maritime Institute, expressed his grief over the incident. “This is a very tragic loss. Vishal was a young man with his whole future ahead of him. We are investigating the circumstances that led to the collapse of the basketball frame, including whether it was due to rust, defective fittings, or lack of maintenance,” he said.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Inspector Santosh Patil confirmed authorities are examining the equipment and will ascertain whether negligence or structural defects contributed to the fatal accident.
This incident echoes previous tragedies in India involving unsafe sports infrastructure. Less than five months ago, 16-year-old national-level basketball player Hardik Rathi died in Rohtak, Haryana, after a basketball pole collapsed while he was practising. Similar incidents have occurred in Haryana’s Bahadurgarh district, raising serious concerns about the safety and maintenance of sports facilities across the country. Experts are now calling for stricter safety audits, regular inspections, and robust guidelines for school and college sports infrastructure to prevent further loss of life.
