Vice Admiral AN Pramod Takes Navy Deputy Chief Role After Operation Sindoor Planning

Vice Admiral AN Pramod, who played a key role in the planning and operational preparedness of the Indian Navy during Operation Sindoor, has assumed charge as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff. The Indian Navy announced the appointment on Saturday, highlighting his experience in naval operations, maritime security, and strategic planning during critical security situations. Vice Admiral Pramod served as the Director General Naval Operations (DGNO) from December 2023 to July 2026. During his tenure, he was closely involved in planning, preparedness, and operational coordination for Operation Sindoor, besides overseeing maritime security operations during the ongoing West Asia crisis, the Navy said.

As DGNO, Vice Admiral Pramod was among the senior officers responsible for coordinating naval readiness and response mechanisms during major security developments. His role included ensuring operational preparedness, evaluating maritime threats, and supporting strategic decision-making at a time when regional security challenges were increasing. Operation Sindoor was launched by India on May 7, 2025, following the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. The operation involved strikes on terror infrastructure and military-related targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Vice Admiral Pramod was among the senior military officials who later briefed the media on the operation and provided details about India’s response. The operation resulted in a four-day military confrontation between India and Pakistan, with both sides engaging in strikes and counter-strikes. During the period, the Indian armed forces maintained a heightened state of readiness across land, air, and maritime domains. The Navy’s preparedness underlined the importance of controlling and securing India’s maritime areas during a period of heightened tensions. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier said that the Indian Navy was prepared to respond strongly if Pakistan attempted further acts of terrorism against India.

Referring to the Navy’s readiness during Operation Sindoor, Singh said that any future aggression would invite a strong response from the armed forces. The appointment of Vice Admiral Pramod as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff comes at a time when the Indian Navy is focusing on strengthening maritime security capabilities, expanding operational readiness, and responding to emerging challenges in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond. His experience in naval operations and strategic planning is expected to contribute to the Navy’s future preparedness.
