Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday paid tribute to those who lost their lives and suffered during the Partition of India, saying the pain associated with the historic division could never be forgotten.
On the eve of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, observed on August 14, Dhami described Partition as one of the darkest chapters in India's history. He recalled that while Independence brought celebration on August 15, 1947, it was accompanied by widespread violence, displacement and immense human suffering.
Dhami said millions of people were affected by the division, with families separated and communities forced to leave their homes. Many people had to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar places after losing their homes, livelihoods and connections. He said the scale of the tragedy made Partition one of the most painful episodes in India's modern history.

The chief minister also recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in 2021 that August 14 would be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The occasion was instituted to remember those who lost their lives, endured displacement and suffered the consequences of the division.
Dhami said preserving the memory of Partition was important to ensure that the experiences of those affected were not forgotten. He said the violence and displacement caused lasting damage to social unity, harmony and human relationships, leaving a deep impact on generations of families.
The Uttarakhand chief minister said remembering the victims should encourage future generations to value unity, social harmony and human sensitivity. He urged people to pay tribute to those who suffered during Partition and said understanding the painful consequences of division was essential to ensuring that such a tragedy is never repeated.
