West Bengal Governor RN Ravi has urged all state and private universities in West Bengal, along with their affiliated colleges and institutions, to observe August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The initiative is aimed at bringing students, faculty members and parents together to remember the suffering and disruption caused by the Partition, particularly in Bengal.
According to a release issued by Lok Bhavan, Bengal, the observance is intended to help younger generations understand the Partition as one of the darkest chapters in India's history. The statement emphasised the displacement, loss of lives and livelihoods, as well as the social, cultural and economic disruption experienced by millions during the period.
Lok Bhavan, Bengal, also shared the official document on X, noting the severe impact of Partition on Bengal. The governor's appeal comes ahead of August 14, which is observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day every year to commemorate those who lost their lives or were displaced from their homes during the division of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021. According to the Press Information Bureau, the annual observance was introduced to remind present and future generations of the suffering endured by people during Partition and to pay tribute to those who lost their lives or were forced to leave their homes.
The government's 2021 announcement noted that although India has moved forward since Partition, the suffering associated with the division of the country should not be forgotten. It also described the observance as a tribute to people who faced violence and displacement during the period surrounding Independence.
Ravi's appeal places particular emphasis on Bengal's experience of Partition and the role of educational institutions in preserving historical memory. The proposed observance is also intended to encourage students to understand the events and circumstances surrounding Partition and remain aware of the consequences of social divisions.
