Uttar Pradesh Achieves 97% Progress In Special Revision of Electoral Rolls

Uttar Pradesh races to perfect electoral rolls before massive February deadline.

Uttar Pradesh has achieved an impressive 97 per cent completion of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as of December 8, Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa announced on Monday. The intensive house-to-house verification and digitisation drive, aimed at ensuring an accurate and updated voter list ahead of future elections, has covered nearly the entire state in record time. This extensive exercise involves thousands of Booth Level Officers verifying details of existing voters, removing duplicate or deceased entries, and adding newly eligible citizens to the rolls.

In a significant relief to applicants, Rinwa clarified that those who submit their voter registration or correction forms online through the Election Commission’s portal are exempt from submitting physical copies to Booth Level Officers. This digital-first approach is designed to reduce paperwork, minimise errors, and make the process more convenient for citizens, particularly the younger demographic accustomed to online services. The move reflects the Election Commission’s broader push towards seamless and paperless electoral management across the country.

The Chief Electoral Officer also elaborated on provisions for Non-Resident Indians, emphasising that any Indian citizen living abroad for employment, education, or other purposes remains fully eligible to register as an overseas elector provided they have not acquired foreign citizenship. Such voters must submit Form-6A online to enrol at their original constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Currently, the state has 1,533 registered overseas electors, a number expected to rise with increased awareness about the simplified online registration process.

Nationwide, the Election Commission of India is conducting the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision across twelve states and Union Territories, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and others. While the first phase was completed in Bihar ahead of its Assembly polls, the current phase follows a structured timeline: draft rolls will be published on December 9, followed by a month-long period for claims and objections until January 8, 2026. After due verification, the final electoral rolls for all participating states will be released on February 21, 2026.

With the process entering its final stages, electoral authorities have urged remaining citizens to immediately check their names on the draft rolls to be released on December 9 and file necessary claims or objections before the January deadline. The near-complete revision in India’s most populous state underscores the scale and efficiency of the ongoing exercise, setting the stage for cleaner and more credible elections in the near future.
