UP’s Challenge: Illegal Migrants Disguise Identities with Fake Documents Amid Drive

Uttar Pradesh has intensified efforts to identify and monitor illegal migrants, particularly Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals, following directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. However, authorities admit that confirming the origins of suspected infiltrators remains a complex challenge.

A 2019 joint police and administrative survey estimated nearly 10 lakh suspected illegal residents in the state. Officials caution that verifying identities through their native districts in Bangladesh will be a time-consuming and resource-intensive process.

Many migrants reportedly claim to be residents of northeastern states, presenting Aadhaar cards as proof. However, a large number of these documents are believed to be forged, often obtained through illegal channels in West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura, making verification extremely difficult.

Even when individuals are successfully identified as illegal migrants, repatriation remains uncertain. Reports indicate that some deported migrants re-enter India shortly after, while Bangladeshi authorities have, in several instances, refused to recognize them as their citizens, further complicating the process.

Police across multiple districts are now conducting fresh identification exercises under state government orders, amid concerns that the number of illegal migrants may have grown significantly since the 2019 survey.

Officials emphasize that sustained coordination with central agencies and neighbouring border states will be crucial for effective detection, verification, and action against illegal infiltration, highlighting the long-term challenges of managing cross-border migration in Uttar Pradesh.
