UP Drives India’s Democratic Strength: Adityanath
UP’s massive vote powers India’s democracy
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the state’s pivotal role in making India the world’s largest democracy during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission’s new building in Avadh Vihar Yojna, Lucknow, on Friday. The modern facility, designed to bolster the state’s electoral framework, underscores UP’s significant contribution to India’s democratic process.
Addressing the gathering, Adityanath highlighted that Uttar Pradesh’s massive electoral participation, with over 12 crore voters in three-tier panchayat elections alone, surpasses the population of many Indian states. “The sheer scale of UP’s electoral process solidifies India’s status as the world’s largest democracy,” he stated. The state currently manages elections for 57,600 gram panchayats, 826 block panchayats, 75 district panchayats, 17 municipal corporations, 199 municipal councils, and 544 nagar panchayats, overseeing more than 14,000 councillors.
Adityanath described voters as the “true guardians” of democracy, stressing that public representatives must honor their aspirations. “If representatives fail to listen, the people hold them accountable every five years,” he said, underscoring the power of the electorate. The new State Election Commission building, to be constructed at a cost of ₹50 crore, will span 2,618.59 square meters across six floors. It will feature advanced infrastructure, including a 25,000-litre RCC water tank on the roof and a 1,00,000-litre underground water tank for enhanced security and operational efficiency.
