SP Demands Probe into Expelled MLA’s Threat Claims
SP Rejects MLA’s Threat Allegations
The Samajwadi Party (SP) has called for a Union Home Ministry investigation into allegations by expelled MLA Pooja Pal, who claimed she faces life threats from the party. In a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, SP’s Uttar Pradesh president Shyamlal Pal dismissed the accusations as “baseless and indecorous,” urging Pal to name those allegedly threatening her. The party insists the probe will expose the truth behind what it calls a BJP-orchestrated smear campaign.
Pooja Pal, a three-time MLA from Chail, Kaushambi, and widow of murdered BSP MLA Raju Pal, was ousted from the SP on August 14 for “breach of discipline” after praising Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s Monsoon session. Pal credited Adityanath for ending the “reign of terror” of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, accused of orchestrating her husband’s 2005 murder, just days after their marriage. Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were killed by assailants on April 15, 2023, while under police escort.
Shyamlal Pal’s letter accused the BJP of using Pal as a “pawn” to undermine the SP’s PDA (Pichhde, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) coalition ahead of the 2027 state polls. He claimed the SP supported Pal through personal crises, with party chief Akhilesh Yadav offering extensive help, only for her to turn against them after aligning with the BJP.

At a Sunday press conference, Yadav expressed skepticism, noting Pal faced no threats during her years with the SP. “We’re in the opposition; how could we threaten her? It’s possible the BJP might harm her and pin it on us,” he said, citing distrust in the state government and justifying the appeal to the Centre. Pal, in a letter to Yadav, alleged the SP harbors criminal elements and claimed her expulsion was an attempt to silence backward communities, holding Yadav responsible for any harm to her.
The controversy has intensified political tensions, with Pal’s accusations of caste bias and SP’s counterclaims of BJP manipulation fueling debates. No formal police complaint has been filed regarding the threats, but the issue continues to stir unrest in Uttar Pradesh’s political landscape.
