UP BTech Gold Medallist Dies By Suicide; Note Mentions Government Job Attempts

A 23-year-old BTech gold medallist was found dead at his residence in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, with police investigating the case as an alleged suicide. Officials said a handwritten note was recovered from the scene in which the engineering graduate reportedly referred to his repeated but unsuccessful attempts to secure a government job. The deceased, identified as Anand Kumar, had graduated in Electrical Engineering from Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology (PSIT) in 2024.

According to available information, he topped his programme at the institute and secured the third rank in Uttar Pradesh. He was later awarded a gold medal by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel during a college function in recognition of his academic performance. Police said Anand was found hanging in his room at his three-storey house while other members of his family had travelled to Bihar to finalise the marriage of his elder brother.

His death came as a shock to relatives and neighbours, who described him as academically gifted and focused on his career. Investigators said a note recovered from the room indicated that Anand had made numerous attempts to obtain a government job but had been unsuccessful. Police have not commented further on the contents of the note and said it forms part of the ongoing investigation. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and officials are examining all aspects of the case.

Police said statements from family members and others close to Anand would be recorded as part of the inquiry to establish the circumstances leading to his death.
