BTech Graduate Dies By Suicide After Failing To Find Job, Leaves Emotional Note

A 23-year-old BTech gold medallist allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Kanpur, with police recovering a handwritten note that mentioned his unsuccessful attempts to secure a government job. The incident has drawn attention to the growing pressure faced by young graduates preparing for competitive examinations amid intense competition for limited employment opportunities. The deceased, identified as Anand, was a top-performing student of Electrical Engineering at PSIT, a private engineering college in Kanpur. According to police, he had topped his BTech programme in 2024 and secured the third rank in Uttar Pradesh.
He was honoured with a gold medal during a college event held on August 13, 2024. Police officials said Anand was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his room at his three-storey house in the Gujaini area of Govind Nagar. The incident came to light after the family’s domestic help informed neighbours and authorities when repeated knocks on Anand’s room door received no response. At the time of the incident, Anand’s family members were reportedly in Bihar to finalise arrangements for his elder brother’s marriage. After receiving information, police reached the residence and broke open the door.
They recovered Anand’s body and found a handwritten five-line note inside the room. According to police officials, the note contained an apology addressed to Anand’s father and referred to his repeated attempts to obtain a government job. The note reportedly stated that he had tried nearly 50 times but could not achieve success. Following the recovery, police sent the body for post-mortem examination. The last rites were later performed at Bhairav Ghat on Saturday evening, according to officials. Anand’s father, Rajkumar, a retired employee of Lohiya Private Limited and a resident of Buxar in Bihar, said his son had completed a one-year apprenticeship with Power Grid after completing his engineering degree.

He later focused on preparing for competitive examinations with the aim of securing a government position. Police officials said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding Anand’s death and examining statements from family members and other available evidence. The incident has renewed discussions about the challenges faced by young professionals and graduates preparing for government recruitment examinations. Thousands of aspirants spend years preparing for competitive tests due to the perceived stability and security associated with government jobs.
