UP Assembly’s Monsoon Session Showcases Democratic Strength

Monsoon session showcases vibrant debates, strengthens UP’s democratic legacy.

Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana declared the recently concluded monsoon session a landmark event, celebrated for exemplifying the "true beauty of democracy" through vibrant, disciplined debates and unprecedented participation. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Mahana highlighted the session’s focus on constructive discussions that enriched the vision of a developed India and Uttar Pradesh.

The session, held last week in Lucknow, featured a two-day debate on “Viksit Bharat, Viksit Uttar Pradesh, Atmanirbhar Bharat, Atmanirbhar Uttar Pradesh,” aligning with India’s long-term development goals for 2047. A remarkable 193 members participated, including 120 from the ruling coalition and 70 from the opposition, with 31 ministers and 24 women MLAs contributing to the discourse. The ruling side included 105 BJP members, seven from Apna Dal, four from the Nishad Party, two each from Rashtriya Lok Dal and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, and three Independents. The opposition comprised 65 Samajwadi Party members, two from Congress, one from BSP, and two from Jansatta Dal.

Mahana noted that the session, though brief, was highly productive, with the House functioning for 32 hours and 28 minutes, losing only 43 minutes to adjournments. This efficiency, he said, reflects a positive stride for democratic engagement. Every member who spoke expressed satisfaction, though time constraints left some unable to contribute, sparking minor disappointment.

A historic milestone was the acceptance of all notices submitted by members, a first for the Assembly. Under new rules, departments were required to respond to every notice, fostering greater accountability and responsiveness. Mahana emphasized that since taking charge in March 2022, he has introduced innovations in each session to enhance the legislature’s dignity, traditions, and procedures.

The session culminated in a rare 24-hour marathon debate on Uttar Pradesh’s “Vision 2047” document, aimed at charting a roadmap for the state’s development in sync with national goals. Mahana praised the open exchange of ideas between treasury and opposition benches, calling it a testament to democratic values. He expressed confidence that the session’s legacy would inspire future assemblies to prioritize constructive dialogue and collective progress toward a self-reliant Uttar Pradesh.
