Two minors die after mother’s alleged self-immolation attempt
Two minor girls died of suffocation after their mother allegedly attempted self-immolation following a reported family dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district on Thursday, police said. The incident took place in Kairana town and has triggered a police investigation into the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
According to police, Anita (30), wife of Jassi, set herself on fire on a bed inside a room of her house. As the flames spread, thick smoke quickly filled the closed room, creating a suffocating environment. Her two daughters, Vandna (10) and one-and-a-half-year-old Jasprit, who were inside the room at the time, lost consciousness due to inhalation of smoke.
Circle Officer Hemant Kumar said police teams rushed to the spot after being alerted and shifted Anita and the two children to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared both Vandna and Jasprit dead on arrival, while Anita is undergoing treatment for burn injuries.

The bodies of the deceased children have been sent for post-mortem examination as part of standard procedure. Authorities said preliminary findings suggest that suffocation caused their deaths due to heavy smoke accumulation inside the sealed room during the incident.
Police officials added that a domestic dispute is suspected to have triggered Anita’s attempt to end her life, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Statements from family members and local residents are being recorded to establish the sequence of events.
Locals told police that Anita’s husband, Jassi, was not present at home at the time of the incident. The case has raised concern in the area, with authorities continuing their inquiry to determine whether any external factors or domestic pressures contributed to the incident. Further legal and forensic procedures are underway.
