Two Men Get 25-Year Jail in Ballia Minor Gangrape Case
Special POCSO court convicts three accused; one offender receives five-year imprisonment.
A special court in Ballia district has convicted three individuals for the gang rape of a 13-year-old girl, delivering sentences on Thursday, September 25, 2025. The case, prosecuted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, has drawn attention due to the severity of the crime and the subsequent blackmail of the victim. Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh reported that Sonu Thakur and Irshad Ansari, both from Ballia, were sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined Rs 52,000 each for the rape of the minor on December 3, 2023. The third accused, Dhruv Narayan Singh, received a five-year sentence and a Rs 22,000 fine for filming and distributing the assault video via WhatsApp to blackmail the victim. The court’s ruling followed a thorough investigation and trial, with the police filing a charge sheet under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act.
The case began when the victim’s mother lodged a complaint, leading to the arrests of the three men. The prosecution revealed that Thakur and Ansari committed the assault, while Singh used the video to intimidate the victim, exacerbating her trauma. The convictions underscore the judiciary’s commitment to addressing sexual violence against minors, particularly under the POCSO Act, which provides stringent penalties for such offences.
