TVK Chief Vijay to Personally Console Families of 41 Karur Stampede Victims on Monday
TVK has arranged special buses to transport bereaved families from Karur and nearby districts to the venue.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay will meet families of the 41 victims killed in the Karur stampede during a private indoor session at a Mamallapuram hotel on Monday, starting at 7:30 AM. The venue was shifted from Karur due to logistical and security considerations, party officials confirmed. The decision followed detailed coordination with local administration to ensure safety and avoid further distress to the grieving families.
TVK has arranged special buses to transport bereaved families from Karur and nearby districts to the venue. A senior party member stated that Vijay will meet each family individually in a media-excluded setting. Police have classified the event as a high-security indoor program, with access restricted to family members and designated officials. Security personnel have been deployed around the hotel since Sunday evening to maintain strict protocol.
The meeting follows TVK’s earlier transfer of Rs 20 lakh in relief to each affected family ahead of Diwali. The Karur tragedy occurred on October 18 when a crowd surge at a TVK welfare rally resulted in 41 deaths, including women and children. Vijay had initially planned to visit Karur but altered arrangements after consultations with authorities. The change reflects sensitivity to the emotional state of the families and the ongoing judicial scrutiny.

The Supreme Court recently directed a CBI investigation into the incident, supervised by a retired Supreme Court judge, setting aside the Madras High Court’s earlier SIT probe. Vijay suspended his statewide campaign for the 2026 Assembly elections in the wake of the tragedy. The pause in political activities underscores the party’s acknowledgment of public grief and its commitment to accountability.
Tamil Nadu government and police attributed the stampede to TVK’s seven-hour delay in Vijay’s arrival and disregard for crowd-control directives. TVK rejected the claims, citing traffic mismanagement by authorities and alleging political interference. Opposition parties AIADMK and BJP have initiated discussions with TVK for a potential alliance against the ruling DMK. These talks remain preliminary as TVK prioritizes victim support and legal proceedings.
