Truth Behind VP Dhankhar’s Sudden Resignation Revealed?
Congress claims deeper reasons beyond health for Vice President’s exit.
The Congress party on Tuesday alleged that Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s abrupt resignation on Monday, officially attributed to health concerns, masks “far deeper reasons” tied to tensions with the ruling regime. Dhankhar, who also served as Rajya Sabha chairman, stepped down with immediate effect, sending shockwaves through India’s political landscape on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh detailed a series of events suggesting underlying friction. On Monday, Dhankhar chaired a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting at 12:30 PM, attended by key figures like Leader of the House JP Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. A follow-up meeting was set for 4:30 PM, but Nadda and Rijiju failed to attend without informing Dhankhar, prompting him to reschedule for Tuesday. “Something very serious happened between 1 PM and 4:30 PM,” Ramesh claimed, hinting at a deliberate snub.
Dhankhar, 74, cited medical reasons—following a recent angioplasty—for his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. However, Congress insists the move reflects deeper discontent. Ramesh praised Dhankhar’s tenure, noting his vocal advocacy for farmers, criticism of “arrogance” in public life, and push for judicial accountability. “He tried to accommodate the Opposition and uphold norms, which he felt were consistently disregarded,” Ramesh said.

The opposition, stunned by the news, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convince Dhankhar to reconsider, emphasizing his value to the nation, especially farmers. Dhankhar’s tenure, beginning in August 2022, was marked by clashes with the opposition, including a failed impeachment motion—the first of its kind in independent India.
“His resignation speaks highly of him but poorly of those who got him elected,” Ramesh added, fueling speculation about internal power struggles.
