Monsoon Session: Lok Sabha Stalled: Opposition Demands Op Sindoor Debate

Protests over Operation Sindoor force Lok Sabha adjournment till 2 PM.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the second time until 2 PM amid relentless protests by opposition members, led by Congress, demanding an immediate discussion on Operation Sindoor. The military operation, a response to the Pahalgam terror attack, targeted Pakistan, and the opposition sought clarity on its implications. The uproar disrupted the first day of the Monsoon Session, preventing normal proceedings.

Speaker Om Birla urged calm, assuring members, “I will allow discussion on Operation Sindoor after Question Hour, but the House must follow rules.” He emphasized maintaining parliamentary standards, stating, “Sloganeering and placards are not allowed; the people expect us to debate critical issues.” Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed this, urging the opposition to raise their demands at the 2:30 PM Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, adding, “The government is ready to discuss all issues approved by the Speaker.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reinforced the government’s openness, saying, “We are prepared for a long discussion on any topic the opposition wants.” Despite these assurances, opposition MPs, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, continued protests in the Well, leading Acting Speaker Jagdambika Pal to adjourn the House. The session’s rocky start highlights tensions over national security and parliamentary protocol.
