Trump Meeting And Global South Priorities Dominate PM Modi's G7 Summit Agenda

PM Modi's summit schedule includes diplomacy, trade and strategic discussions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the G7 Summit 2026 in Evian, France, on June 16 and 17, where he is expected to highlight the priorities of developing nations and engage with world leaders on key global challenges. The summit marks the eighth consecutive G7 gathering to which India has been invited, underscoring the country's growing influence in international affairs.

Ahead of the summit, Modi said India would use the platform to advocate for the aspirations and concerns of the Global South. In an official statement issued before his departure for Europe, the prime minister said India's participation reflected the trust placed in the country by its international partners and its expanding role on the global stage.

Modi emphasised that India would not only represent its own interests but also serve as a voice for developing nations facing challenges related to economic growth, climate change, energy security, technology access and sustainable development. The Global South has become a key theme of India's recent diplomatic outreach, with New Delhi consistently calling for greater representation of emerging economies in global decision-making.

The summit is also expected to provide an opportunity for high-level bilateral engagements on the sidelines. Among the most closely watched meetings could be an interaction between Modi and US President Donald Trump, amid ongoing discussions and differences between New Delhi and Washington on several strategic and economic issues. Any meeting between the two leaders is likely to attract significant attention given the importance of India-US relations.

The G7, comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, regularly invites partner countries to participate in discussions on global economic and geopolitical issues. India's repeated invitations reflect its growing economic weight and its role as a key stakeholder in addressing international challenges ranging from energy security to technological innovation.

As world leaders gather in Evian, discussions are expected to focus on global economic stability, geopolitical tensions, artificial intelligence, climate action and international trade. India is likely to use the forum to strengthen partnerships, advance its diplomatic priorities and reinforce its position as a leading voice for developing countries in an increasingly complex global environment.
