Tripura’s Working Women Get Rs 75.24 Cr Boost
New hostels to provide safe, modern living spaces.
In a significant step toward empowering working women in Tripura, the Central Government has allocated Rs 75.24 crore to establish 10 state-of-the-art working women’s hostels across the state, an official announced on Saturday. The funds, released by the Department of Expenditure, Government of India, cover a substantial portion of the total project cost of Rs 114 crore, aimed at providing secure and comfortable accommodation for women employed in various sectors.
Director of Social Welfare and Social Education, Tapan Kumar Das, shared details of the ambitious initiative with PTI, stating, “Ten working women’s hostels will be set up across Tripura to provide accommodation facilities to working women. Two will be established in Agartala, while the others will be located in Bodjungnagar, Dharmanagar, Kailashahar, Ambassa, Udaipur, Belonia, and Sabroom.” The Tripura Housing Board has been tasked with executing the project, with construction already underway for five hostels and preparations for the remaining ones nearing completion. The project is slated for completion in the 2025-26 financial year.
Each hostel is designed to accommodate 100 women and will feature modern amenities, including attached kitchens, bathrooms, and washrooms, ensuring decent living conditions. Additional facilities such as gymnasiums, parks, conference halls, and 24-hour security will enhance the quality of life for residents. Special arrangements will also be made to accommodate divyangjan (differently-abled) working women, ensuring inclusivity.

Currently, Tripura has only one functional working women’s hostel in Agartala, with a capacity of just 46 seats, which is insufficient to meet the growing demand. The new hostels will cater to women working in industrial belts, domestic workers from outside areas, and employees in private firms or companies. “These hostels will provide a safe and supportive environment for women, enabling them to pursue their careers with confidence,” Das added.
The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the accommodation challenges faced by working women, particularly those relocating from rural or other areas for employment. With the new hostels, Tripura aims to create a network of secure and modern living spaces, fostering greater workforce participation among women. As construction progresses, the project is expected to transform the lives of hundreds of women, offering them not just shelter but a foundation for professional and personal growth.
