Tragic Death of Class 8 Girl in Telangana After Falling from Autorickshaw
Schoolgirl dies while transporting chairs for Republic Day event.
A heartbreaking incident in Telangana’s Kamareddy district claimed the life of a class 8 student who fell from a moving autorickshaw while helping transport chairs. The girl, Sangeetha, a student at a government residential Gurukul School for Scheduled Caste children in Banswada mandal, lost her balance during the journey and suffered fatal injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival due to severe head trauma, bleeding from the ears, and multiple facial and hand injuries.
Reports indicate that school staff had arranged an autorickshaw to carry chairs intended for a Republic Day function to the principal’s house. In a clear breach of child safety norms and labour laws, minor students including Sangeetha were assigned the task of unloading and transporting the items. Visuals from the scene reportedly showed this was the fourth instance where a child either jumped out or fell from the same autorickshaw, yet the driver failed to stop and sped away after taking a turn.
Local authorities noted that the driver was a regular visitor to the school hostel, often ferrying girls. Preliminary inquiries suggest he might have been under the influence of alcohol or hard of hearing, potentially contributing to his failure to notice or respond to the accident. IAS officer Kiranmayi Koppisetty, overseeing the area, confirmed the driver has been taken into custody pending further investigation into possible negligence and intoxication.

The tragedy sparked immediate protests from Sangeetha’s family, local residents, and student unions, who accused the school administration of gross negligence. Questions have been raised about why young children were made to perform manual labour instead of hiring adults, and why basic safety measures were ignored during the transport. Student organisations have called for strict action against the school principal, Sunitha, and other staff present during the incident.
A formal probe has been launched to examine safety lapses at the residential school. Sangeetha’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events and ensure accountability.
