Tragedy at Nilgiris Construction Site: Three Migrant Workers Buried Alive in Sudden Sand Collapse
Three migrant workers die in Nilgiris construction site collapse in Tamil Nadu.
In a tragic accident at a construction site in Jagathala Odanatti near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, three migrant workers were buried alive after heaps of sand and portions of a retaining wall suddenly collapsed on them on Saturday. The workers were engaged in soil excavation for a residential project when the incident occurred.
Emergency responders, including police, fire, and rescue personnel, rushed to the site after being alerted by fellow workers and locals. The three victims, identified as Abdul Rahman (22), Naseer (33), and Usman (36), were pulled from the debris and rushed to a government hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.
Authorities have registered a case at the Aruvankadu police station, and the bodies have been sent for autopsy at Coonoor government hospital. Officials are investigating whether the construction work had proper permissions and safety measures in place.

Coonoor sub-collector confirmed that the incident occurred during authorised excavation work and that a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the collapse. Meanwhile, former Coonoor MLA Shanthi Ramu highlighted that many construction sites in the Nilgiris operate without proper clearance and urged government action against unauthorised work.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about construction safety standards in hilly areas, especially regarding the use of heavy machinery like JCBs without adequate precautions. Authorities have promised strict enforcement of safety regulations to prevent similar accidents in the future.
