Torrential Rains Cause Landslides In Nagaland, Nine People Feared Dead

At least nine people are feared dead and 12 others injured after torrential rainfall triggered multiple landslides in Mon town of Nagaland on Sunday. The landslides caused widespread destruction across the town, damaging dozens of houses and leaving rescue teams engaged in a search operation to locate missing residents. According to Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, rescue teams have recovered five bodies so far, while four people remain missing and are believed to be trapped beneath debris.

Officials said the search operation is continuing as teams work through the affected areas to locate survivors and recover those missing. The landslides occurred at multiple locations across Mon town between 6 am and 2 pm following intense rainfall. The disaster caused significant damage to residential areas, with at least 45 houses reported to have been destroyed. Several families have been displaced due to the destruction and are being provided temporary shelter and assistance.

"We have recovered a total of five bodies so far — four by afternoon and one more this evening. Four are still missing, so our search and rescue teams are trying to locate them or their remains," Deputy Commissioner Konyak said. The heavy rains have also severely affected transportation and connectivity in the district. Mon town has been completely cut off, with major roads leading to the district headquarters becoming inaccessible due to flooding and landslides.

The Deputy Commissioner said the roads connecting Mon with Tizit and Naginimora have been blocked because both sub-divisions are facing flood-related disruptions. The alternative route from Mokokchung is also unavailable after a connecting bridge collapsed, making travel and relief operations more difficult. Officials said the only available route currently involves travelling through Tuensang district, which has significantly increased the travel time required to reach Mon. The disruption has created additional challenges for emergency teams attempting to provide assistance and carry out rescue operations.

A relief camp has been established at the Konyak Union office in Mon town to support residents affected by the disaster. Authorities are arranging basic facilities for displaced families while rescue teams continue their efforts in the landslide-hit areas. The latest incident comes as several parts of the Northeast continue to face heavy rainfall and weather-related disruptions. Hill districts in the region are particularly vulnerable to landslides during periods of intense rainfall due to steep terrain and unstable soil conditions. Local authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid travelling through vulnerable areas until conditions improve.

Emergency response teams are also monitoring locations where further landslides or flooding could occur if rainfall continues. The Nagaland government and district administration are coordinating relief and rescue measures while assessing the overall damage caused by the landslides. Officials said further details regarding casualties and property losses will emerge as rescue operations continue. For now, the priority remains locating the missing people, providing medical assistance to the injured and ensuring the safety of residents affected by one of the worst rainfall-related incidents reported in Mon town in recent times.
