Nagaland Landslide Tragedy Leaves Four Dead, Several Others Feared Missing

At least four people have been killed and eight others are feared dead after a massive landslide struck Nagaland's Mon district amid heavy rainfall, officials said. The landslide triggered extensive damage in the area, washing away several houses and leaving rescue teams searching through debris for missing residents. Mon district officials said four bodies have been recovered so far, while search and rescue operations are continuing to locate those who may still be trapped.

Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak said that eight people are feared dead and authorities are working to retrieve more victims from the affected area. The rescue operation has been complicated by the continuous flow of water into the landslide-hit region following the heavy rains. Police officials said the difficult conditions, including debris and flooding, have slowed efforts to reach affected areas and locate survivors. Teams from the police, Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local volunteers have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.

Personnel are working through challenging terrain to clear debris, assist affected families and search for people who remain missing. The Nagaland government expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and said it was closely monitoring the situation. In an official statement, the state government said it was reviewing the impact of ongoing extreme weather conditions affecting several parts of Nagaland. The landslide is among several weather-related incidents reported across the state due to intense rainfall.

Apart from Mon district, areas including Tuli subdivision in Mokokchung district have also witnessed severe impacts, including flash floods, landslides, road blockages and damage to public infrastructure and private property. Authorities have warned residents to remain cautious as heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of the Northeast. Landslides and flash floods are common during periods of intense rain in the region due to its mountainous terrain and vulnerable slopes.

The Nagaland administration is coordinating with district authorities and emergency response teams to assess the extent of damage and provide assistance to affected communities. Officials are also monitoring road connectivity and infrastructure damage caused by the extreme weather. As rescue operations continue, authorities are focusing on recovering those trapped under the debris and providing support to families affected by the tragedy.
