The Sengottaiyan Factor: Leading Vijay's TVK to a Decisive Win in Gobichettipalayam
Nine-time MLA Sengottaiyan the key figure in Vijay’s TVK camp.
Veteran politician K. A. Sengottaiyan has emerged as a key figure in Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), securing his ninth victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026 from the Gobichettipalayam constituency. His win is particularly significant as it marks his first electoral success under the banner of the newly formed party after decades in rival political ranks.
Sengottaiyan, a former senior leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), was expelled from the party in November 2025 following internal disagreements. He subsequently joined TVK, bringing with him over five decades of political experience. His entry into Vijay’s camp is seen as a strategic boost for the relatively young party, which has largely been built on first-time candidates and grassroots mobilisation.
Born on January 9, 1948, Sengottaiyan first entered the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 1977 at the age of 29 and has since established himself as one of the state’s longest-serving legislators. During his long tenure with the AIADMK, he was a close associate of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and held several key ministerial portfolios, most notably serving as the state’s School Education Minister.

In TVK, Sengottaiyan currently serves as Chief Coordinator of the party’s executive committee, playing a crucial role in organisational strategy and political planning. Party insiders regard him as a senior advisor whose administrative expertise complements the energy of newer entrants in the party.
In the 2026 Assembly elections, Sengottaiyan retained his stronghold in Gobichettipalayam, defeating N. Nallasivam of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) by a margin of 16,620 votes. He secured 82,612 votes, according to data from the Election Commission of India, underlining his continued influence in the region despite switching political allegiance.
Following the results, Sengottaiyan led a large celebratory roadshow in Erode, drawing thousands of supporters and party workers. His ability to retain voter support even after leaving the AIADMK highlights his personal political base, making him a significant asset for TVK as it looks to consolidate its position in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape.
