Telangana Sentiment Returns to Fore Amid Political Tensions Over Pawan Kalyan

Telangana political tensions escalate after Pawan Kalyan’s controversial remarks.

Political tensions in Telangana have intensified after Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Jana Sena Party leader Pawan Kalyan’s recent remarks triggered a strong backlash from several political parties, activists, and civil society groups, pushing regional sentiment back into the centre of the state’s political discourse.

The controversy erupted following a press conference held by Pawan Kalyan in Hyderabad, which was originally intended to clarify his position after his party was denied permission to conduct a public meeting marking Telangana Formation Day. His remarks, including statements that “regionalism is worse than terrorism” and warnings about threats to national unity, were widely criticised by opposition parties and Telangana-based organisations for being provocative and insensitive to regional sentiments.

The situation further escalated after the Jana Sena leader reportedly responded sharply to critics, stating that Telangana is not a “jagir (fiefdom)” of anyone’s family. This comment drew sharp reactions across party lines in Telangana, with political leaders accusing him of disrespecting the state’s identity and the historical struggle that led to its formation in 2014. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), an ally of Jana Sena, remained largely supportive, most other political forces in the state strongly condemned his remarks.

Tensions were already running high following an earlier dispute involving Telangana political analyst Professor K. Nageshwar, whose comments during a television debate led to legal action and FIRs registered by Andhra Pradesh police on complaints from Jana Sena functionaries. The case triggered a political storm, with Telangana leaders and journalist groups expressing solidarity with Nageshwar and demanding withdrawal of the cases, further deepening inter-state political friction.

The controversy intensified when Jana Sena sought permission to hold a public meeting in Hyderabad on Telangana Formation Day, which was denied by Cyberabad police citing potential law-and-order risks. Authorities stated that recent statements and counter-statements by leaders from both states had created a sensitive environment, with fears of public unrest and protests. The denial of permission and subsequent legal and political developments added fuel to the already heated atmosphere.

In the aftermath, leaders across Telangana, including Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao, criticised Pawan Kalyan’s statements, asserting that the state requires respect for its identity and struggles rather than political provocation. With both sides exchanging strong words and public sentiment increasingly polarised, the controversy has revived long-standing sensitivities around Telangana’s statehood and regional pride, turning it into a major flashpoint in the state’s political landscape.
