Telangana Launches Probe Into Alleged Misuse of Defunct IDPL Land by MLA
Government orders vigilance inquiry into BRS MLA's alleged encroachment.
In a significant move to address allegations of large-scale land misuse involving public assets, the Telangana government has directed the Vigilance and Enforcement department to conduct a thorough investigation into claims that Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao has encroached upon valuable land originally allotted to the now-defunct Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL).
The accusations, prominently levelled by Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha and supported by other voices, centre on a specific parcel in survey number 367 of Kukatpally village within Medchal-Malkajgiri district, with independent estimates placing the market value of the disputed land at an extraordinary Rs 4,000 crore due to its prime location and developmental potential.
Prompted by the gravity of these claims, the Chief Minister’s Office sought an immediate preliminary assessment from the Medchal-Malkajgiri District Collector, whose subsequent report formed the basis for escalating the matter to a full-fledged vigilance probe, ensuring an impartial and detailed examination with results to be submitted to the state authorities in due course.

The roots of the dispute trace back to 1963, when the undivided Andhra Pradesh government allocated approximately 900 acres across Kukatpally, Balanagar, and Moosapet villages for establishing IDPL operations, which ceased bulk drug production in 1966 and fully shuttered its formulations unit in 2003, leaving overlapping survey boundaries that have since facilitated conflicting ownership assertions.
Notably, both Kalvakuntla Kavitha, who raised the initial concerns, and the accused MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao have publicly endorsed the government's decision to launch an independent investigation, expressing mutual confidence that the process will transparently clarify the facts and resolve the longstanding controversy surrounding the high-value IDPL land holdings.
