Telangana Advocates Protection Act Comes Into Force To Protect Lawyers Across State

Telangana enforces law to protect advocates from threats and harassment.

The Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026 has officially come into force from Tuesday after the state government issued a formal notification, marking a significant legal reform aimed at ensuring the safety and security of advocates while performing their professional duties.

The implementation was notified through Government Order (G.O.) No. 41 issued by the Law Department under the Revanth Reddy-led administration of Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy. The Act, which was passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly in March 2026 and subsequently received the Governor’s assent, is intended to provide structured legal protection to members of the legal profession across the state.

The legislation introduces key safeguards for advocates, including provisions for police protection during threats or attacks, mechanisms to prevent harassment and false cases, and the establishment of a dedicated grievance redressal system. The government has stated that the Act is designed to ensure that advocates can carry out their professional responsibilities without fear of intimidation or retaliation.

Officials had earlier noted that the Bill was drafted following recommendations from the Bar Council of Telangana and inputs from various High Court Bar Associations and legal bodies. Law Minister D. Sridhar Babu had described the measure as a significant step toward strengthening the legal ecosystem, stating that it enhances professional confidence and underscores the importance of the legal profession in upholding justice.

The Act comes into force shortly after a high-profile incident involving the killing of Telangana High Court advocate Khaja Moizuddin in Hyderabad. The advocate was allegedly targeted near his residence in Masab Tank on May 23, in what police described as a planned attack. The incident had raised serious concerns within the legal community regarding the safety of practicing advocates.

Police investigations led to the arrest of several individuals, including Congress leader Mujahid Alam Khan, his father Nawab Mahbub Alam Khan, and others, in connection with an alleged conspiracy linked to a long-standing dispute over Waqf property and related legal cases. The case intensified calls for stronger protective measures for legal professionals in the state.

Authorities have said that the newly enforced law places Telangana among a small number of states, including Karnataka and Rajasthan, that have introduced dedicated legislation to protect advocates. The move is expected to strengthen institutional safeguards and reinforce confidence among legal practitioners across the state.
