Technical Glitch Prompts Midair Turnaround Of Kannur-Jeddah Air India Express Flight
Aircraft returned safely after crew reported engine-related issue.
An Air India Express flight bound for Jeddah returned to Kannur International Airport on Tuesday after pilots detected an engine-related warning during the journey, airport sources said. The precautionary return was carried out safely, and all passengers on board were reported to be unharmed. The flight, carrying more than 180 passengers, departed from Kannur at approximately 7.40 am for the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah. According to airport sources, the aircraft had been airborne for nearly two hours when the flight crew noticed an engine warning light.
Following standard safety procedures, the pilots decided to discontinue the journey and return to the departure airport. Authorities said the aircraft landed safely in Kannur without any incident. Emergency protocols were followed as a precaution, and passengers were safely disembarked after the aircraft arrived at the airport. Airport officials confirmed that there were no injuries and that all passengers were safe. Sources familiar with the matter said a preliminary inspection of the aircraft identified an issue related to the fuel filter.
Technical teams subsequently began a detailed examination of the aircraft to determine the exact nature of the fault and carry out the necessary repairs before the aircraft could be cleared for service again. Before returning to Kannur, the aircraft reportedly remained in the air for some time to reduce excess fuel weight. Such procedures are commonly undertaken in situations where an aircraft must return shortly after take-off, allowing it to land within prescribed safety limits.

The manoeuvre was completed successfully before the aircraft commenced its landing approach. The incident comes at a time when airlines worldwide continue to place a strong emphasis on operational safety and precautionary decision-making. Aviation experts note that warning alerts are designed to enable flight crews to respond quickly to potential technical issues, even when they do not pose an immediate threat. Air India Express and airport authorities are expected to review the incident in accordance with standard aviation protocols while making alternative arrangements for affected passengers.
