Tamil Nadu Hospital Honors Nursing Dedication on International Nurses Day
Thoothukudi Medical College honours nurses' dedication to patient care.
International Nurses Day was observed at Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital on Tuesday with an awareness rally and a series of events recognising the contribution of nurses to the healthcare system. Doctors, nurses, trainee nursing students, and hospital staff participated in the programme, which highlighted the vital role nurses play in patient care and medical services. Hospital authorities said the event was organised to honour the dedication and commitment shown by nursing professionals despite increasing work pressures and staff shortages.
The programme began with senior doctors and hospital administrators extending greetings to nurses on the occasion of International Nurses Day, celebrated globally every year on May 12. Officials praised nurses for their tireless service in hospitals and healthcare institutions, describing their contribution to patient treatment and recovery as invaluable. Speakers at the event noted that nurses often remain at the forefront of emergency care, long-term treatment, and public health support, making them an essential pillar of the healthcare system.
As part of the celebrations, an awareness rally was organised from the hospital campus to V.O.C. College. Participants carried placards and marched through the route to spread awareness about healthcare services, patient welfare, and the importance of the nursing profession. Hospital officials said the rally aimed to educate the public about the dedication and responsibilities carried by nurses while also encouraging greater respect for healthcare workers serving in hospitals and clinics.

Speaking during the programme, Nursing Superintendent Amutha Rani acknowledged the shortage of nursing staff but said nurses continued to perform their duties with commitment and compassion. She stated that patient welfare remained the highest priority for healthcare workers despite operational challenges and increasing demands on medical institutions. According to her, International Nurses Day serves as an important occasion to recognise the sacrifices and contributions made by nurses who often work under difficult circumstances and extended schedules.
Another nurse, Uma Maheswari, described Nurses Day as one of the most meaningful celebrations for members of the profession. She said nurses frequently miss major festivals such as Deepavali and Pongal because of work commitments and emergency responsibilities at hospitals. As a result, she noted, International Nurses Day has become a special occasion for nurses to celebrate their identity and contribution to society. She added that trainee nursing students also participated enthusiastically in the awareness rally alongside senior staff members.
Hospital authorities further announced that nurses who had completed 25 years of service would be honoured during a felicitation ceremony later in the day. The recognition programme is expected to be attended by district officials, including the local District Collector. Organisers said the event was intended not only to celebrate nursing professionals but also to inspire younger healthcare workers to continue serving with dedication and compassion. International Nurses Day is observed worldwide to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing.
