PM Modi Welcomes BJP Government's Decision to Implement Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal
PM Modi welcomes West Bengal's new BJP government implementing the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme for eligible households.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed the decision of the newly elected BJP government in West Bengal to implement the Centre’s flagship Ayushman Bharat health insurance programme in the state. The Prime Minister said the move would ensure that millions of people in West Bengal gain access to affordable and quality healthcare services under what he described as the world’s largest healthcare scheme. The announcement marks a major policy shift in the state following the BJP’s victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi expressed satisfaction over the development and said the welfare of the people of West Bengal remained a priority for the government. He stated that eligible families in the state would now receive health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh annually under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Modi also emphasised that the newly formed “double-engine government” would help ensure smoother implementation of major Central welfare schemes in the state. The term is often used by the BJP to describe situations where the same party governs both the Centre and the state.
The announcement came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari chaired his first cabinet meeting following the BJP’s historic electoral victory in the state. After the meeting, Adhikari announced six major decisions taken by the new administration, including the implementation of Ayushman Bharat. He described the decisions as part of the government’s agenda to bring “Asol Poriborton,” or “real change,” to West Bengal. The state had previously stayed away from the Ayushman Bharat programme under the former Trinamool Congress administration.

Ayushman Bharat is one of the Union government’s largest public healthcare initiatives and provides cashless health insurance coverage to economically weaker households across India. The scheme aims to reduce the financial burden of medical treatment by covering hospitalisation expenses for eligible beneficiaries. Several BJP leaders have previously criticised the former West Bengal government for not adopting the programme, arguing that residents of the state were missing out on central healthcare benefits available elsewhere in the country. The implementation of the scheme is now expected to become a key policy initiative of the new administration.
The BJP recently secured a landmark electoral victory in West Bengal, winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly and ending the long rule of the Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress government. The Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats in one of the most closely watched state elections in recent years. The election outcome marked the first time the BJP formed a government in West Bengal, significantly altering the political landscape of the state and strengthening the party’s presence in eastern India.
Political analysts believe the implementation of Ayushman Bharat could become one of the BJP government’s most visible governance measures in West Bengal during its initial months in office. Supporters of the move argue that access to central healthcare benefits could improve medical affordability for low-income households across the state. At the same time, opposition parties are expected to closely monitor the implementation process and the government’s broader welfare agenda. The development also signals closer policy alignment between the state and the Union government following the BJP’s electoral breakthrough in West Bengal.
