Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Reshuffles Cabinet, Allocates Key Portfolios Including AI Ministry

Tamil Nadu Cabinet expanded with AI ministry and key portfolio reshuffle.

The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced a major Cabinet expansion and reshuffle, with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay reallocating key portfolios and inducting new ministers, significantly altering the composition of the 33-member Council of Ministers, which now operates close to its sanctioned strength of 35.

In the latest expansion, 23 new ministers were inducted into the Cabinet, including 21 representatives from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and two legislators from the Congress party. The move marks a notable political development, particularly the Congress party’s return to the state Cabinet after nearly six decades. The reshuffle also strengthened the government’s administrative reach across multiple departments and regions.

Chief Minister Vijay retained major portfolios including Home, General Administration, Police, Revenue-related administration, and Urban and Municipal Affairs. However, the Women Welfare portfolio was removed from his charge, while new responsibilities such as Special Initiatives, Poverty Alleviation, and Rural Indebtedness were added. Several departments were redistributed among senior ministers as part of the revised allocation issued on May 21.

Among the key changes, K A Sengottaiyan, who initially handled Finance, was shifted to the Revenue and Disaster Management portfolio, while Finance was reassigned to newly inducted minister N Marie Wilson along with Planning and Development. A separate and exclusive Artificial Intelligence ministry was also created for R Kumar, who will additionally oversee Information Technology and Digital Services, marking a first-of-its-kind administrative portfolio in the state.

The reshuffle also saw significant allocations across departments: Congress MLA S Rajesh Kumar was given Tourism, while P Viswanathan was assigned Higher Education. Several new ministers were allocated key sectors such as Agriculture, Forests, Housing, Transport, Labour Welfare, and Social Welfare, reflecting a broad-based expansion of responsibilities across the Cabinet.

Meanwhile, political discussions continue over further coalition participation, with the Indian Union Muslim League yet to finalise its ministerial nominee and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi still deliberating its entry into the ruling alliance. The reshuffle is expected to reshape administrative priorities while consolidating the government’s political base in the state.
