Stray Dog Scare Forces Closure Of 10 Chamoli Schools For Four Days In Uttarakhand

Stray dogs force ten schools to close.

Ten schools in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district have been ordered to remain closed to students for four days following concerns over an increase in incidents involving stray and aggressive dogs in the Narayanbagar area. The temporary closure has been implemented as a precautionary measure to protect students from potential attacks and other risks while authorities assess the situation. The affected schools will remain closed from August 20 to August 23. The decision followed a letter issued by the Pramukh of Kshetra Panchayat Narayanbagar on August 19, drawing attention to the reported threat posed by stray and aggressive dogs in the area.

The communication highlighted concerns about student safety and prompted the education authorities to take precautionary action. Officials have opted to keep students away from school premises during the specified period rather than expose them to potential risks while the situation remains a concern. The closure order was issued by Akash Saraswat, Chief Education Officer of Chamoli, following directions from the District Magistrate. The order applies to 10 schools in the Narayanbagar area and specifically provides for students to remain at home during the four-day period.

Authorities have treated the measure as a temporary safety step in response to the reported increase in incidents involving stray dogs. Although students have been granted a holiday from physical classes, the schools have not been directed to suspend academic activities altogether. Teachers have been instructed to continue educational work through online classes during the closure period. The arrangement is intended to ensure that students do not lose instructional time while allowing them to remain away from areas where authorities have raised concerns over stray and aggressive dogs.

The issue of stray dogs has become a significant public safety concern in several parts of India, particularly where attacks involving children can result in serious injuries.  Schools are especially sensitive locations because students may travel on foot, wait outside school buildings or move through residential areas where stray animals are present.  In the Chamoli case, authorities have chosen preventive action after receiving a formal communication about the situation. The four-day closure will provide local authorities with an opportunity to monitor developments in Narayanbagar and assess the safety situation around the affected schools.

The education department's decision also places emphasis on maintaining continuity of learning while prioritising the physical safety of students. Teachers will therefore continue to engage with students through digital platforms until regular classroom activities can resume. The temporary shutdown is scheduled to remain in effect through August 23, after which authorities can assess whether students can safely return to the affected schools. Any decision to extend or end the precautionary measure would depend on the situation on the ground and directions from the district administration. For now, officials have sought to balance student safety with educational continuity by keeping campuses closed while shifting teaching activities online.
